Lolo pass between Idaho and Montana, this is close to the route that Lewis and Clark made a couple hundred years ago.

Ok, I've caught up reading your posts. Good ones Dave.
My first VW experience was when I was in Junior High and a beloved teacher took several of us to a national student council meeting in his VW. I thought he was really cool and so I thought his VW was equally cool. But as you mention there were significant shortcomings.
I think you would not get away with transporting children in the back with the seat removed now!!
